Prague Institute

Prague

Prague has one of the best public transportation systems of metro, trams and buses in Europe. All participants at the Prague Institute receive a travel pass for using the entire system. It's hard to be lost for long with the easy to find metro and tram stops. The following link help in scheduling routes and departure/arrival times. Prague's trams and metro trains are extremely punctual.

Tram/Metro/Bus Information in Prague

Follow these points of etiquette when using Prague's public transportation systems. You'll feel like a native and won't stand out like a tourist (and potential pick-pocket victim!)

Prague public transportation etiquette:

  • Seats near the entries on trams, metro and busses are marked with green crosses. These indicate seats for the handicapped, elderly, pregnant women, and women with small children. If you sit in one of these spots, be on the look-out for such people. It is expected for a younger person, male and female to give-up their seat (even in non-designated seats) if such people are present.
  • On escalators, it is expected that everyone who is standing – not ascending or descending the escalator stairs –stand to the right, so that anyone walking up or down can pass freely. If you forget and stand in their way, they may say, "s dovolenim," and this is what you need to learn to say if you want to pass a tourist who does not know the etiquette.
  • If the metro or tram is crowded and you are standing at the entrance when the next stop arrives, you may need to get out, let those who are exiting off, and then get back on yourself.
  • Do not shout or talk over people who may be sitting or standing between you and a friend. Wait to have a conversation until you are standing beside each other and then do so in a moderate voice. Some tourists think that because the local people speak a different language, they don't hear you. Many Czechs speak English and understand everything you are saying. You may also find that the person next to you is American or English.
