Prague Institute
SUMMER

Film Studies

The Film Studies Program at NCSU offers courses each summer at the Prague Institute, which is open to NCSU students as well as students from other institutions. Although the courses being offered will vary on a year-to-year basis, students will typically have one or two courses to choose from among the following possible offerings: ENG 282—Introduction to Film; ENG/COM 374—History of Film from 1940 Present; ENG 433—Screenwriting; and ENG/IDS 492—a topics course on either Czech or European Cinema. Courses will focus a significant portion of their content on Czech and Eastern/Central European film. Most of the film studies courses will fulfill General Education requirements in Visual & Performing Arts and/or Global Knowledge. They will also fulfill major requirements for Communications, English, and Arts Applications.

Students may take both film studies course offerings to form a cohesive unit, or just one course paired with another General Education offering from the Prague Institute. Because Prague has such a rich history of film production, students taking these courses can expect some interesting extracurricular experiences to coincide with their studies. Past students have taken a tour of Barrandov Studios, the major production facility in the Czech Republic; have gone to an evening performance of a silent film with live orchestral accompaniment at Prague’s oldest movie theater; have toured the Sedlec Ossuary that Jan Švankmajer made a documentary about in 1970; and attended a new American movie release with a largely Czech audience in a Prague movie theater.
