Education

The Czechs can boast one of the highest literacy ratings in the world since education historically has been held of supreme importance. In 1365, King Charles IV, became the ruler of all the kingdoms of the Holy Roman Empire. In 1348, he founded the University of Prague, named after him (Charles University), the first university in Central Europe. Soon Prague emerged as the intellectual and cultural center of Central Europe. After WWI, in 1918, Czechoslovakia came into existence under the leadership of Tomas Garrigue Masaryk, Czechoslovak statesman, sociologist, and philosopher. In 1882, he had been appointed Professor of Philosophy in the Czech part of the University of Prague, and in 1915 he became Professor of Slav Research at King's College in London. His presidency, until his death in 1939, was marked by his emphasis on education, and during this time the Czechs soared in technological advancements and innovations.
