Keeping in Touch

By Mail

Mail from the US takes from 5 days to 14 days. Packages are very expensive to send and can take up to 4 weeks. If you intend to send a laptop computer or any other electronic devices (not recommended), make sure to mark it ‘gift’ or ‘personal use’ on the insured package.

To receive mail or packages, please use the Institute address:

Calling Home

From the US

To call from the US dial 011-420 and the local number.

To the US

To call from the Czech Republic and Europe to the US, dial 001, then the area code and the number.

Mobile Phones

Owners of standard GSM phones (but not USA or Canadian phones) with access to roaming services can usually use their phones in the Czech Republic. For details, you should check with your operator.

The cheaper alternative is to register with one of our local operators. Prepaid phone cards (O2, T-Mobile, Vodafone) are perhaps the most efficient options for shorter-term use.

Internet Calling

An internet phone program is the cheapest and the most comfortable way to call home. We recommend Skype. You can download it for free from www.skype.com. You can call for free if it's computer-to-computer. Make sure your family and friends download the program onto their computer. You can also credit your account and call from Skype to any regular or mobile phone. Check for rates from the Czech Republic to the country you are calling (US 2 cents/minute to land lines)-check to be sure this is current.

Public phones

Some public phones accept coins, others accept phone cards only, but many accept both coins and cards. Phone cards for either 200 CZK or 400 CZK can be bought from newspaper stands, tobacconists, post offices, department stores, hotels, travel agencies, etc. Local calls from phone cards cost approximately 50 cents a minute and $2/mi. internationally. There are a variety of global calling cards; check online for these.
