The Glass Route


The excursion takes students along the “Glass Route” in North of Bohemia, following where glass production first began as early as the 13th century in the foothills of the picturesque Lusatian Mountains.

Day 1

Železny Brod-Visiting Lhotsky

“The tradition of the Mold melted glass studio in Pelechov, Czech Republic, dates to the 1950´s, when it was established by world famous Czech glass artists Stanislav Libenský and Jaroslava Brychtová. Their successor and the current owner of the Studio is the firm Lhotský, s.r.o., which is managed by Zdeněk Lhotský, a student of Libenský. One can see signed pieces from limited series of his collection ranging from giant vessels through smaller bowls to fused and slumped plates.”

 

Železny Brod Town Museum

Features a chronological exposition of glass-making in Železny Brod with a beautiful collection of the Libenský/Brychtová team.

Jablonec nad Nisou to visit the Museum of Glass and Jewelry

The collection of the Museum of Glass and Jewelry in Jablonec nad Nisou comprises of tens of thousands of articles of glass costume jewelry and glass.

Visit a Black Glass and/or glass bead shop.

Stay at Hotel Ještěd
The restaurant and hotel in the Jested tower is a unique piece of architecture. It was built in the second half of the 1960s, designed by architect K. Hubacek who received the Perret’s Prize of the International Union of Architects for it.

Day 2

Liberec to visit the studio of artist Iva Ouhrabkova

The Museum of North Bohemia
The expositions of the Museum of North Bohemia focus on the field of arts and crafts and the industry of decorative arts, and also on the regional natural history, archeology and history.

Lunch at the Zoo café.

Glass-blowing Workshop at Ajeto, Novy Bor
Students will create objects (tumbler, vase) by glass-blowing under the supervision of expert teachers one-on-one. Visit includes the museum and gallery.

Dinner and accommodation at Ajeto.

Day 3
Novy Bor to visit the Glass Museum
The museum collection of Czech glass dates from the 17th century to the 20th century and mainly reflects the development of glass in the Bory Šenov area. The museum introduces the basics of the manufacturing technology of glass and coating (painting, engraving, cutting, metallurgical engineering).


Skalice u České Lípy to visit TGK (Technical Glass Art) Store and Studio
Jaroslav Svácha, the proprietor, will give us a tour of his facility which focuses on the fabrication of large-scale architectural commissions with a retail outlet of kiln-forming supplies. Students will receive a discount on any materials they purchase.


Travel to Panská Skála (Lord’s Rock) near Kamenicky Šenov, and Sloup v Čechach
Due to the unusual rock columns, some measuring up to 12 meters, The Lord's Rock looks like a pipe organ. Sloup v Čechach is a unique community built into the rock formations at the foot of the Lusatian Mountains.

Travel to Mělník
Visiting the Chateau includes time for lunch and a wine-tasting in the wine-cellar.
