STS 323: World Population & Food Prospects

Interdisciplinary Perspectives GEP: 3 Credits

 

The course will focus on the acute and chronic challenges facing growing populations (given finite resources), effectiveness of current and planned development initiatives, appropriate kinds of assistance (intended to reduce dependency and paternalism), sensible use of limited and vital resources, and avenues of global sustainable human development that lead to increased freedom of choice for all of us. Guest lectures by Czech faculty and field trips to commercial and family farms, food processing and marketing initiatives, public health/ hygiene programs/ facilities, sustainable development/ environmental approaches, industrial activities pertaining to food production, and political/social programs) will be undertaken to provide a Central European context.
