COM 523: International & Intercultural Communication

This survey of intercultural and international communication theories and issues will include these topics: cultural contrasts in verbal and non-verbal forms of communication; cultural identity; cultural conflict, stereotypes, prejudice, and discrimination; adaptation, acculturation, assimilation; the role of ethnic media, general market media, and digital media in ethnic identity and cultural stereotypes; the role of media in portrayals of other cultures and nations; differences in media systems; overt and covert forms of media censorship; and current issues in international advertising and public relations. The class is designed around student-led discussions of readings and explorations of specific intercultural and international communication topics via student research projects. Readings will draw on Czech and/or Eastern Europe contexts. Lectures by local experts and excursions to relevant cultural/historical sites also will be included.
