International organizations and other international regimes for facilitating cooperation between sovereign states play a vital role in addressing a wide range of global issues, in the areas of security, international trade and finance, the environment, human rights, and more. This course will examine the role of such international organizations in shaping important outcomes in world politics. How and why are international organizations formed? How do they evolve over time? Do international organizations reflect the interests of the powerful states that are their members, or do they reshape political identities and agendas in their own right? What authority do international organizations wield? European states participate in a dense network of intergovernmental organizations so we will take advantage of our time in Prague to consider how the Czech Republic interacts with the European Union, the European Court of Human Rights, and other international bodies through guest speakers and site visits. We intend to conduct a trip to nearby Vienna, Austria to visit the United Nations and the International Atomic Energy Agency as part of the course experience.
