PS 507: Civil Liberties: Human Rights

UNITS
3 Credits

This course explores the politics, policies and practices that promote as well as undermine human rights in the modern global society. It describes the role of international organizations in developing a transnational human rights regime, in policing governmental and non-governmental actors accused of abusing human rights, and in protecting the human rights of individuals and marginalized populations. Also, this course examines human rights from a comparative perspective by assessing the extent to which nation states like the United States and the Czech Republic have embraced and incorporated international human rights protocols in their legal and political systems. Finally, this course discusses how societies like the Czech Republic, South Africa and Peru have implemented reconciliation and other policies that address flagrant human rights abuses committed under past regimes.Throughout the summer session, students will have opportunity to interact with government officials, nongovernmental organizations and private parties through arranged site visits and invited guest lecturers.
