Focusing on European Modernism and Post-Modernism in concert music, this course will explore major figures in Western Europe such as Stravinsky, Britten, Messiaen, Boulez, Andriessen, central Europeans (Webern, Berg, Bartok, Martinu, Ligeti), and notable figures working under socialist realism (Shostakovich, Penderecki, Lutoslawski), considering significant works and their historical and artistic contexts. Attendance at several Prague Spring Music Festival concerts will be included.  No pre-requisite.
