This course surveys the international horror cinema from its roots in German Expressionism and the Universal studios films of the 1930s to recent developments, including satire (Scream), “torture” film (Hostel), and the plethora of recent remakes of 1970s American horror films (Texas Chainsaw Massacre; Day of the Dead; The Crazies; Nightmare on Elm Street). We will place special emphasis on Czech culture, literature, and horror by exploring the influence of Gothic literature and architecture, the golem (a figure from Czech and Jewish folk tales), and the robot (the literary invention of Czech writer Karel Capek). Films will include: Nosferatu, The Golem, The Bride of Frankenstein, Onibaba, Invasion of the Body Snatchers, Peeping Tom, Alien, Greedy Guts/Otesanek, Funny Games, and Hostel.
