Visual and Performing Arts or Global Knowledge GEP
This course explores the aesthetic, technological, and economic developments of the second half of the cinematic century. Half of the course will focus closely on the cinema of Eastern and Central Europe: Hungarian, Polish, Romanian, Russian, Czech, as well as films from around the world: Italy, France, Britain, Germany, Japan, India, Iran and Cuba. Students will get familiar with important cinematic movements, key players, films within those movements, and their larger historical context. Through screenings, readings, class discussions, students will gain demonstrable critical insight into politics, aesthetics, and philosophical debates that shape it.
