This 6 week studio will focus on both experimental approaches with fiber structures and materials—using frame and off-loom techniques; stitching; and hand and/or digital surface design and printing. The course strongly emphasizes observation and response to the city of Prague; keeping an extensive travel journal/sketchbook; finding supplies and materials in an unfamiliar environment; and implementing ideas through small studies and/or finished works. A variety of textile media and techniques will be explored in conjunction with idea development, color theory and use to capture the rhythms, patterns, colors, and experience of urban Prague with the textile medium. Research will be conducted through gallery and museum visits, meeting contemporary Czech fiber art and textile design practitioners, and exploring the textile history of the Czech Republic as a backdrop to the studio work.
An emphasis will be placed on walking through the city to record, through sketching and photography, the discoveries about the nature of this lovely city. Research will be documented through daily journal entries and sketching in the city, with textile interpretations happening in the Prague Institute studio.
