Illustration ultimately is a form of explanation—visualization of a particular
idea or concept. It may have a relationship to text, either by visually embodying the idea of the textual information it supports, or by incorporating text into the body of the illustration itself. The power of illustration is in its ability to incorporate various combinations of visual representation or “writing” to help relay an idea or process.
The studio introduces illustration through drawing; printmaking (including mezzotint and lithography); photography; typography; bookbinding and digital media. Students are exposed to historical and contemporary works for a contextual framework. They will engage with craft processes and put it all to work in exercises and projects centering on Czech literature and poetry, and editorial themes based on current or historical events. Keeping an illustrated journal is central to documenting and recording the semester's adventures in Prague.
