Jim Anderson

Drawing | Instructor

Jim Anderson has been drawing for a living for over forty years as a watercolor artist, architectural illustrator, drawing instructor and talented designer. Originally trained as a Landscape Architect, with a BLA from the University of Illinois (Champaign-Urbana), Jim has worked on projects in site design, site planning, urban design and land planning in the early years of his career and was a founding partner in a successful midwest Landscape Architecture practice for nine years.

For eight years Jim was an Associate Professor at Ball State University where he was in charge of the graduate program, and taught graphics, drawing and sketching, painting and design studios in the undergraduate program and was a design critic for both Architecture and Landscape Architecture   thesis studios. In 1981 he took the post of Senior Lecturer in The School For The Built Environment in Brisbane, Australia teaching in architecture, landscape architecture, and planning programs with responsibilities for curriculum development and teaching graphics and design studios.

While teaching ‘down under’ he formed his illustration firm in 1983 focusing on supporting the visual communication needs of architects', landscape architects', planners' and interior designers' disciplines with emphasis on client presentation, project fundraising and design conception. Deciding to devote himself full time to his practice, he relocated his practice back to the States in 1985. For the last twenty-four years Anderson Illustration Associates has been located in Madison, Wisconsin, offering a full range of visual solutions and illustration services to national as well as international clients and projects. Some of his regular landscape architectural clients include Sasaki Associates, JJR Associates, UDA, Design Workshop, Ayers Saint Gross and FTB in San Francisco.

Today Jim balances his time between his private watercolor painting, workshops and seminars on sketching/drawing, watercolor technique, and color principles, and his ongoing illustration business.
